Structural Iron Beams

Wrought and cast iron components that are part of a structure create a complex environment in which to measure stress. This complexity increases when it is necessary to determine loads/stresses without direct physical contact, often the case with historically important structures.

StressProbe is a non-contact inspection method making it ideal for measuring stress in these structures. It is able to sense structural stress through paint and other protection layers up to 5mm in thickness.

Ageing structures have often survived for a long period but can be exposed to new risks. Adjacent developments can have an impact on these structures possibly causing disturbance of the foundations.

Examples include St Pancras railway station (wrought iron) and the tunnel liners made for London Underground (cast iron). In the case of St Pancras railway station the new Eurostar Terminal excavations could influence the foundations of the old station (which has to be preserved).

StressProbe has been used to successfully monitor these types of structures and determine if the changes in stress are significant.
