U31 FAQ

Can I use U31 probes with an AMIGO?

Summary : Yes, with an adaptor cable.
Detail : TSC's underwater probes comprise separate probe head and probe cable. As a result, with an AMIGO to U31 probe adaptor cable, a U31 probe head can be used with an AMIGO. The adaptor is known as the AMIGO Underwater Probe Cable.

Can I use AMIGO probes with a U31?

Summary : AMIGO Underwater probes only.
Detail : TSC's underwater probes (U31 or AMIGO) comprise separate probe head and probe cable. As a result an AMIGO Underwater probe head can be used in conjunction with a standard U31 underwater probe cable.

Can I use a U31 to do top-side (above water) inspection?

Summary : Yes.
Detail : It is possible to use a U31 top-side but consideration must be given to the cooling requirements of the instrument. This is of particular importance in hot climates. In addition, the probe cables used for underwater work are very stiff and may hinder deployment in a top-side environment.

If I break a U31 umbilical cable can I reterminate it and use a shorter length?

Summary : Yes.
Detail : Yes but if it is joined to other umbilicals the total length must not exceed 320m.

What is the maximum operating depth of the U31?

Summary : 300m normally, 2000m option available
Detail : Umbilical cables for diver deployment are supplied in 150m lengths. There is also an initial 20m cable supplied at the topside end and the maximum recommended total length is 320m. Support for depths of up to 2000m are available for ROV deployment.

What is the maximum communications cable length when using RS485 communications protocol?

Summary : 1.5km
Detail : When supplied with the RS485 communications interface specification for ROV deployment, the maximum distance from the U31 topside unit to the U31 subsea bottle is 1.5km.
